💜💛 Honoring the Legacy of Miss Georgia Washington 💜💛
On Friday, February 28, 2025, we invite everyone to wear purple and gold as we celebrate the remarkable life and contributions of Miss Georgia Washington, a true patriot whose dedication to education changed countless lives.
Born into slavery in 1851, Miss Washington overcame immense adversity to become a trailblazing educator. In 1893, she founded the Peoples Village School, providing Black students with access to education at a time when opportunities were scarce. Her school grew from just four students to over 225 students by 1916, eventually expanding to include multiple buildings and farmland for hands-on learning.
Her unwavering commitment to service, education, and community upliftment embodies the spirit of patriotism—working to create a brighter future for generations to come. Even after her 43 years of service, her influence continued, and the school was renamed in her honor.
In 2018, the Town of Pike Road acquired the Georgia Washington Middle School campus and ensured that her name would remain on the school and her grave would be preserved. Today, the site continues her legacy as Pike Road High School.
Campus-wide tribute events include:
✨ Decorating her grave
✨ Social studies classes visiting her burial site
✨ Reflecting on her lasting contributions as part of Black History Month
Help us honor this true patriot and pioneer in education by wearing purple and gold and celebrating her legacy!
